Saturn, Uranus and Optimism
Sun in Virgo, Moon in Leo
Over the past weeks, I’ve heard from people all over the world who’re feeling demoralized, anxious about the chaos in so many areas of life.
Unsettling as events are, understanding the nature of what’s taking place is the first step to exchanging anxiety for optimism.
What’s more, because knowledge is power, knowing what’s behind the changes currently unfolding casts the future in positive light. This clarity makes both planning and action far more possible.
These unsettling changes are being ushered in by a single, powerful, transformative and, ultimately, beneficial planetary pattern.
The two players in this drama are Saturn, which is about structure, tradition, security and stability, and Uranus, the planet of innovation and the unexpected. Since late 2007, when Saturn moved into the sign opposite Uranus, the energy of change – dramatic change – has been building.
This touches every area of life, from situations of an economic nature to those that reshape the individual’s life, such as work, the structure of home and family, and personal values and goals.
Saturn’s clash with Uranus breaks up old patterns. While most are restrictive, they’re still reassuringly familiar, so we cling to them.
Think of it as if you were moving into a new home. Having found your ideal place, there’s the difficult and dusty process of packing, and in particular, deciding what must go and what to take. And figuring out how to live in the new environment, where things will fit. No matter how exciting the anticipation of life in a new setting may be, the actual move and adjusting to a new setting is unsettling and disorientating – and takes time.
The influence is Saturn and Uranus is exactly like this. Except, it’s the whole world that’s in transition. What’s old, familiar, stable – but restrictive – is going but, as with moving house, it will take time for the new to settle in.
While this process of transition began in 2007 and lasts until mid 2010, there are specific turning points, days when the planets are precisely opposite each other.
The first time was on November 4th, 2008, the day Obama was elected, and the second, February 5th of this year, when he was inaugurated.
Whatever your politics, the election of a black man of African parentage, who was a virtual unknown only two years before, as president of the United States, marks an extraordinary departure from old patterns.
However, th
is isn’t just about politics.
As the old systems break down, those who are inventive, enterprising and willing to try out something new will begin to spread their wings. They’ll experiment with reshaping the workings of the world.
These clever, enterprising individuals who, when challenged with the unexpected, view the challenges that worry others as an invitation to experiment. They say “why not,” and try out their new ideas with no concern about the approval of “higher-ups”.
While few have come to public attention, you may know several such way-showers, those whose capacity to devise a new approach is now beginning to shape our future.
This week, on September 15th, Saturn and Uranus form the third opposition – in a series of five, over three years – and we’re reached another turning point.
Except this time, there’s another kind of election.
It involves how each individual in the world elects to react to these changes. Just as with moving house, there would be every reason to complain about the disarray and stick with the familiar.
But this is a time of discovery.
View the disarray in your own life, perhaps at work or around you as an opportunity to explore. Try something new. Do something you’ve always intended to do. Break away from what’s safe – because it may not be wise or safe for long anyway.
Work on a plan alone or with those who inspire you.
Take a chance, and you’ll not only become part of that change, you’ll discover the joy in experimentation and exploration. You’ll wake up each day glowing with optimism, because you know that you’re creating the future.

I’m definitely feeling the “pull” once again. I do my best to keep a positive mindset but when you see your credit cards increase each month and your checking decrease, it can be tough. I’ve been working on “allowing” and receiving which has been working with little stuff. But, I could use a BIG windfall to get me back on track. I want to be one of those people who practices what she preaches, but it can be a struggle.
