Avatar and Messages From Spirit (part two)
In Avatar and Messages From Spirit (part one), I introduce the Avatar movie, cite it as a spiritual masterpiece and promise to, in this article – part two of the series – examine the basic spiritual foundations upon which I believe Avatar is predicated.
Though there are the obvious messages of unity, interconnectedness, the plea to honor Mother Earth and Father Sky there are a plethora of more subtle omens, messages and oracular guidances.
Again, if you are walking a spiritual path – if you are working on remembering your divinity – I urge you to see Avatar.
First, and, perhaps…just perhaps…most important is the etymology of the name (title) of the movie.
Because of the computer age which is upon us, most think of an avatar as the thumbnail picture, image or character which represents us in, usually, an online identity.
But when you know the history and symbolism of the word avatar, its ‘etymology’, you begin to dive into a deep, deep well of divine messages from Spirit.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines ‘avatar’ thusly:
Etymology: Sanskrit avat?ra? descent, from avatarati he descends, from ava- away + tarati he crosses over
1 : the incarnation of a Hindu deity (as Vishnu)
2 a : an incarnation in human form b : an embodiment (as of a concept or philosophy) often in a person
3 : a variant phase or version of a continuing basic entity
4 : an electronic image that represents and is manipulated by a computer user (as in a computer game)
In the story, Jake Sully, a human, is chosen to replace his identical twin brother on a mission to the planet, Pandora (just wait until I get into an examination of the etymology of the name ‘Pandora!).
Jake, is an ex-marine and paraplegic, having lost the use of his legs in battle. Remember this point because it’s integral to the outcome of the movie and the specific spiritual message I’m writing about.
Because humans can’t breathe in the atmosphere on Pandora, all who travel to the planet either have to go as an avatar or wear special breathing apparatus.
In the movie, an ‘avatar’ is a host body synthetically grown but whose features are a combination of the human meant to inhabit the host form and a Na’Vi – the native culture of Pandora.
For a human to use the host body, the ‘essence’ of that human is sent electronically, via ‘radio-like’ waves, to the ‘brain’ of the avatar.
Jake’s directive is to inhabit the avatar grown for his identical twin brother and integrate himself into the Na’Vi culture so as to learn their ways that he may report all back to his command.
So, it’s an interesting juxtaposition.
The human, in this case Jake, has the physical limitation of being in a wheelchair…unable to use his legs. But, as an avatar, he has all the physical capabilities of the Na’Vi species – which are considerable and formidable.
Now…another juxtaposition…though, as Na’Vi avatar, Jake is the better physical version of himself (even when he had the use of his legs) he still has a human brain and, as the story unfolds, we see how much closer to ‘oneness’…closer to God…are the Na’Vi than are humans. (i.e.. how much more a
wake, conscious and aware are the Na’Vi compared to humans).
Jake, then, literally has to see the world through three sets of eyes.
1. Jake’s identical twin brother, whom the avatar was originally built for, died and because Jake’s DNA was a perfect match, he was chosen for the mission to Pandora.
2. Because the avatar host body is ‘grown’ from Na’Vi DNA, that which is ‘Jake’, has to ‘fit’ into a being not completely unlike himself yet alien.
3. Finally, there are Jake’s own eyes which come with their own ‘vision’.
How is it then, that Jake can reconcile all the sets of eyes he must see through to accomplish his mission?
In Hinduism, an avatar is the incarnation of a deity in human form.
And, isn’t that exactly what we all are?
Avatar’s as it were?
Just like in the Avatar movie, we are all one. We are interconnected with all that is and through all space and time.
Though we may not be aware of it on a daily basis – minute to minute – we do ‘see’ through each other’s eyes because we are each other. Part of all that has been and all that will ever be.
One day, we will remember this and truly ‘see’ again.
It is clear the names for both the title of the movie and the home planet of the Na’vi – Pandora – were chosen with deliberate care.
James Cameron and Spirit! What a great combination!
In Avatar and Messages From Spirit (part three), I’ll delve into the etymology of the word Pandora.
On a final note, the word Pandora and the spiritual message behind it may not be as obvious as you think…
Note: As it turns out, Spirit lead me in a different direction for Avatar and Messages From Spirit (part three). However, in Avatar and Messages From Spirit (part four) I write about the etymology of the word Pandora, its spiritual message and, fascinatingly enough, it didn’t even turn out to be what I thought it would be!

I love, love, love this movie…I’ve seen it twice in 3D and would def go again! Great article Colette!
I am looking forward to your thoughts/interpretations on Pandora. I had a dream about Pandora’s box two days before I saw the movie. Great blog!
Thank you Colette: That’s awesome! I love this movie saw it at the Imax 3D, which was so real. I was deeply touched by this movie and I’m sure will see it a few more times while it’s in the theatre. I look forward to the meaning of pandora. I did a project once and when I saw the word pandora in a magazine, my whole body started shaking and I was unable to flip the page. So hopefully the definition will bring me some clarity and insight into this. Love and Light.
I saw this movie yesterday (January
instead of seeing The Blind Side because of a movie time change. As an aspiring screenwriter who plans on writing screenplays with a “message,” I was blown away by this movie. The CGI and effects were amazing as was the score. I picked up on the political, spiritual, and philosophical undertones. I’m interested to read your take on Pandora. Of course, I thought of Pandora’s Box, but there’s more to it.
I want to see Avatar at the IMAX and will purchase it when it comes out on DVD! Many people in the group saw the movie two or three times. The message is being received loud and clear. I was kind of surprised by this. It’s a good sign that people are waking up!
I also loved this movie and was generally so surprised as to the content and spirituality. As I am Native American I found it fascinating that the whole lifestyle and beliefs of the people was totally based on Native American spiritual beliefs and lifestyle. The Native Americans have been very awake and conscious for thousands of years!!!!
I absolutely LOVE this movie! When I visualise myself in my paradise I now imagine myself in Pandora and how exquisite is that! Love your articles Collete, Thank You
Yes and in taking the film for it’s literal symbolism, will you be discussing “savages” and “indigenous”?
My son and I went to see Avatar and we did not want to come back! It was so amazing and had such great messages, definitely right on time. It does help us to remember like you said. Thank you Colette for writing about avatar and sharing your insights! I am looking forward to seeing the movie again at the Imax.

www.shelleyvonstrunckel.comSomebody's been holding back on you. While people often keep things to themselves because that information is of little significance, the facts in question are becoming increasingly important. And because of that, you're urged to raise these now. The more swiftly they're out in the open, the sooner they'll be dealt with. By Shelley von Strunckel
Last week the ideas planet, Mercury, moved into Taurus and this week it's formed brilliant aspects to both Mars and the uncompromisingly truthful Pluto. While the facts that have emerged won't always have been welcome or easy to deal with, what's come to light is enabling you to make pivotal decisions. By Shelley von Strunckel
When you first ignored certain facts, it was both because they were complicated and you felt they'd have little impact on your plans. However, things have changed, so much those seemingly unimportant facts are now of considerable significance. Remember that when you think about ignoring other facts that seem equally unimportant. By Shelley von Strunckel
Few things are more unsettling than sudden changes in plans, and when you've struggled to get things organised, it's even worse. However, because these events are being triggered by this weekend's eclipsed New Moon, which is about breaking up familiar patterns, whatever is going is paving the way for something better. By Shelley von Strunckel
During times of challenge, everybody has advice to offer. Now that you're wrestling with an excess of exciting yet unsettling developments, others assume all is well, so have vanished. Let them know you need them now, too. It may be merely for moral support but they could also have useful advice to offer. By Shelley von Strunckel
You pride yourself on your objectivity. But several arrangements are so dear to your heart that you won't even hear criticism of them. Now, however, events are making it clear that not only must you acknowledge their faults, some might need a serious rethink. And, perhaps, one or two need to end. By Shelley von Strunckel
Obviously now that you've reached the point at which discussions are about to turn into decisions, you'd prefer that the arrangements you organise be lasting. But that's not only unlikely, with this weekend's eclipse shaking things up, it's unrealistic. Aim for the best you can do now, but expect changes. Lots of them. By Shelley von Strunckel
It's the rare Scorpio who'd plunge into any situation, whether personal or of a practical or professional nature. Still, judging by this week's stunning planetary activity, in which your ruler Pluto takes a starring role, what's coming your way is far too exciting to refuse. At least explore offers. You'll be glad you did. By Shelley von Strunckel
There are times when you can afford to be easygoing about details. But this isn't one of them. While it's true that changes in circumstances will continue until early June, you need to ensure your plans are sound. Make no commitments until you're confident those decisions are based on solid facts. By Shelley von Strunckel
If there's any problem with the way you're approaching certain pivotal decisions, it's that you intend to make them once and be done with it. Be more flexible. These and any other decisions are being made during a period of change, which means even the simplest of plans is unlikely to last long. By Shelley von Strunckel
Every sign will be influenced by this weekend's eclipse, which is the first of two. In your particular case, the circumstances of those closet, friends or loved ones, are likely to be changed or challenged. Unsettling as events are initially, deep down you know these aren't just important, they're vital. By Shelley von Strunckel
Abandoning tricky issues for others to deal with isn't your style. Yet it's increasingly clear they have a far greater interest in the particular situation than you do. If you feel you're abandoning your responsibility, discuss it with them. The odds are good they'd no idea how you felt and are happy to take over. By Shelley von Strunckel
