Avatar and Messages From Spirit (part two)
In Avatar and Messages From Spirit (part one), I introduce the Avatar movie, cite it as a spiritual masterpiece and promise to, in this article – part two of the series – examine the basic spiritual foundations upon which I believe Avatar is predicated.
Though there are the obvious messages of unity, interconnectedness, the plea to honor Mother Earth and Father Sky there are a plethora of more subtle omens, messages and oracular guidances.
Again, if you are walking a spiritual path – if you are working on remembering your divinity – I urge you to see Avatar.
First, and, perhaps…just perhaps…most important is the etymology of the name (title) of the movie.
Because of the computer age which is upon us, most think of an avatar as the thumbnail picture, image or character which represents us in, usually, an online identity.
But when you know the history and symbolism of the word avatar, its ‘etymology’, you begin to dive into a deep, deep well of divine messages from Spirit.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines ‘avatar’ thusly:
Etymology: Sanskrit avat?ra? descent, from avatarati he descends, from ava- away + tarati he crosses over
1 : the incarnation of a Hindu deity (as Vishnu)
2 a : an incarnation in human form b : an embodiment (as of a concept or philosophy) often in a person
3 : a variant phase or version of a continuing basic entity
4 : an electronic image that represents and is manipulated by a computer user (as in a computer game)
In the story, Jake Sully, a human, is chosen to replace his identical twin brother on a mission to the planet, Pandora (just wait until I get into an examination of the etymology of the name ‘Pandora!).
Jake, is an ex-marine and paraplegic, having lost the use of his legs in battle. Remember this point because it’s integral to the outcome of the movie and the specific spiritual message I’m writing about.
Because humans can’t breathe in the atmosphere on Pandora, all who travel to the planet either have to go as an avatar or wear special breathing apparatus.
In the movie, an ‘avatar’ is a host body synthetically grown but whose features are a combination of the human meant to inhabit the host form and a Na’Vi – the native culture of Pandora.
For a human to use the host body, the ‘essence’ of that human is sent electronically, via ‘radio-like’ waves, to the ‘brain’ of the avatar.
Jake’s directive is to inhabit the avatar grown for his identical twin brother and integrate himself into the Na’Vi culture so as to learn their ways that he may report all back to his command.
So, it’s an interesting juxtaposition.
The human, in this case Jake, has the physical limitation of being in a wheelchair…unable to use his legs. But, as an avatar, he has all the physical capabilities of the Na’Vi species – which are considerable and formidable.
Now…another juxtaposition…though, as Na’Vi avatar, Jake is the better physical version of himself (even when he had the use of his legs) he still has a human brain and, as the story unfolds, we see how much closer to ‘oneness’…closer to God…are the Na’Vi than are humans. (i.e.. how much more a
wake, conscious and aware are the Na’Vi compared to humans).
Jake, then, literally has to see the world through three sets of eyes.
1. Jake’s identical twin brother, whom the avatar was originally built for, died and because Jake’s DNA was a perfect match, he was chosen for the mission to Pandora.
2. Because the avatar host body is ‘grown’ from Na’Vi DNA, that which is ‘Jake’, has to ‘fit’ into a being not completely unlike himself yet alien.
3. Finally, there are Jake’s own eyes which come with their own ‘vision’.
How is it then, that Jake can reconcile all the sets of eyes he must see through to accomplish his mission?
In Hinduism, an avatar is the incarnation of a deity in human form.
And, isn’t that exactly what we all are?
Avatar’s as it were?
Just like in the Avatar movie, we are all one. We are interconnected with all that is and through all space and time.
Though we may not be aware of it on a daily basis – minute to minute – we do ’see’ through each other’s eyes because we are each other. Part of all that has been and all that will ever be.
One day, we will remember this and truly ’see’ again.
It is clear the names for both the title of the movie and the home planet of the Na’vi – Pandora – were chosen with deliberate care.
James Cameron and Spirit! What a great combination!
In Avatar and Messages From Spirit (part three), I’ll delve into the etymology of the word Pandora.
On a final note, the word Pandora and the spiritual message behind it may not be as obvious as you think…
Note: As it turns out, Spirit lead me in a different direction for Avatar and Messages From Spirit (part three). However, in Avatar and Messages From Spirit (part four) I write about the etymology of the word Pandora, its spiritual message and, fascinatingly enough, it didn’t even turn out to be what I thought it would be!

I love, love, love this movie…I’ve seen it twice in 3D and would def go again! Great article Colette!
I am looking forward to your thoughts/interpretations on Pandora. I had a dream about Pandora’s box two days before I saw the movie. Great blog!
Thank you Colette: That’s awesome! I love this movie saw it at the Imax 3D, which was so real. I was deeply touched by this movie and I’m sure will see it a few more times while it’s in the theatre. I look forward to the meaning of pandora. I did a project once and when I saw the word pandora in a magazine, my whole body started shaking and I was unable to flip the page. So hopefully the definition will bring me some clarity and insight into this. Love and Light.
I saw this movie yesterday (January
instead of seeing The Blind Side because of a movie time change. As an aspiring screenwriter who plans on writing screenplays with a “message,” I was blown away by this movie. The CGI and effects were amazing as was the score. I picked up on the political, spiritual, and philosophical undertones. I’m interested to read your take on Pandora. Of course, I thought of Pandora’s Box, but there’s more to it.
I want to see Avatar at the IMAX and will purchase it when it comes out on DVD! Many people in the group saw the movie two or three times. The message is being received loud and clear. I was kind of surprised by this. It’s a good sign that people are waking up!
I also loved this movie and was generally so surprised as to the content and spirituality. As I am Native American I found it fascinating that the whole lifestyle and beliefs of the people was totally based on Native American spiritual beliefs and lifestyle. The Native Americans have been very awake and conscious for thousands of years!!!!
I absolutely LOVE this movie! When I visualise myself in my paradise I now imagine myself in Pandora and how exquisite is that! Love your articles Collete, Thank You
Yes and in taking the film for it’s literal symbolism, will you be discussing “savages” and “indigenous”?
My son and I went to see Avatar and we did not want to come back! It was so amazing and had such great messages, definitely right on time. It does help us to remember like you said. Thank you Colette for writing about avatar and sharing your insights! I am looking forward to seeing the movie again at the Imax.

www.shelleyvonstrunckel.comWhen you care about somebody, you're not shy about showing it. However, one particular individual has been far less forthcoming about revealing their feelings, which has been upsetting. You're only just realising this is no indication they don't care, but simply that they're less demonstrative than you, which is a huge relief. By Shelley von Strunckel
Admittedly, the situation you're dealing with is as complex as it is urgent. However, the real problem is the unwillingness of those involved to even consider making changes. Don't let this stop you suggesting them. Simply factor in that they'll probably refuse you, at least until they discover you're right. By Shelley von Strunckel
Few things frustrate you more than dealing with somebody whose thinking is so rigid they don't even realise they're refusing to explore the world around them, or what they're missing. But that's exactly what you're contending with. Challenging as this is, if anybody can get them to consider new ideas, it's you. By Shelley von Strunckel
By the time of the New Moon, early next week, the odds are good you'll be looking at certain rather awkward circumstances from an entirely unexpected perspective. Knowing that, urgent as others insist it is that you make decisions, organise them so they can be easily changed. Eventually, they'll thank you. By Shelley von Strunckel
In the case of most differences, if you can't strike an accord, you can at least find a way to create a working relationship. However, in one particularly tricky situation you're finding it difficult to even discuss the gulf between you. Consequently, for the time being, you're better off simply agreeing to disagree. By Shelley von Strunckel
While you're capable of great diplomacy when the occasion warrants, you see no point in being tactful with those who simply aren't making an effort. Before you confront them, ask a few questions. Their seemingly half-hearted approach isn't what you think. They've completely misunderstood the situation and what's expected of them. By Shelley von Strunckel
The line between being discreet and keeping potentially important information to yourself isn't always a clear one. And it's especially confusing at the moment, since one particular individual is already somewhat paranoid about being short of facts. Update them on the latest now, but ensure they know this must go no further. By Shelley von Strunckel
You have a stubborn streak. This has surfaced recently in clashes with others over potential changes in elements of your work or lifestyle. While you regard these as completely unnecessary, they insist they're overdue. Only now are you realising that they're not only wise, those changes would make it all a lot easier. By Shelley von Strunckel
Those who simply ignore your views yet make unrelenting attempts to win you over to theirs infuriate you. Consequently, you've avoided telling certain individuals where you stand on several pivotal issues. This is only causing confusion. Stick to a simple explanation and you won't overstep the line, as you so fear you will. By Shelley von Strunckel
Initially, when you made certain plans some weeks ago, you both investigated the facts and explored the ideas of those whose opinions you respect. While this is all well and good, things have changed greatly since then. Enough that you owe it to yourself to conduct a serious review of your plans. By Shelley von Strunckel
Usually it's issues of a subjective nature, such as those involving concepts and feelings, that can result in confusion, while practical and financial matters are more straightforward. Now it's the reverse. This may have to do with the sudden shifts in the actual circumstances involved, which leave you making changes nearly every day. By Shelley von Strunckel
If you disagree with somebody, don't be shy about expressing those views. While at times you might be wise to worry that you'd upset them, at the moment that could be exactly what's needed to raise pivotal issues. Only once these are out in the open is there any hope of achieving an accord. By Shelley von Strunckel
