Trusting Your Intuition: The Sixth Energy!

Intuition — our sixth energy — is a natural part of all of us — although many of us were raised to repress these “gut hits” in favor of logic and reason! 

But when you don’t honor and trust your gut, your creative energy can be misdirected and you will make choices that you may regret later. Instead of working on behalf of your imagination and vision, it shows you evidence of stories full of mistakes,threats and detours, contracting instead of expanding your view of what is possible. The key is to balance this energy so you can see infinite potential, picking up on ideas, vibes, and messages that might be otherwise lost. 

Intuition: Your Inner GPS System

Our western world tends to prioritize facts and figures, while writing off or distrusting what we can’t prove through linear thinking. Yet, intuition is one of your most powerful senses. In fact, many of the world’s most creative thinkers, including Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein, and Spanx founder Sara Blakely, credit their intuition for guiding their successful decisions. 

I love what Oprah Winfrey says about trusting her gut: “I’ve trusted the still, small voice of intuition my entire life. And the only time I’ve made mistakes is when I didn’t listen to it.”

To me, intuition is more than JUST a gut feeling. 

It is kind of like a radio – that enables you to dial up a frequency I call Radio SoulFM so you can tune in to pick up on the many signs, feelings, and factors that come together to give you guidance and direction from the Universe. It’s both deeper and wider than just the internal nudges you feel that guide you toward or away from something. 

Intuition involves a greater way of knowing that you cannot simply explain through logic. It’s like stepping into a stream of information that includes emotions, experiences, other peoples’ memories, new perspectives on the past,and glimpses of the potential future. 

That sounds amazing, right?! We’ve got this hotline to the Universe — we just have to pick up the receiver!

Learning to Trust Your Intuition

But we’re not really taught how to leverage this powerful force. What does it feel like? How do you make it even stronger? And if you feel a strong intuitive hit, how do you confirm it? 

After all, we get all sorts of emotions and sensations all day, every day. Which ones are our “internal GPS,” and which are fear, worry, wishful thinking, or a gassy tummy from all those nachos you scarfed at lunch??

In fact, one of the biggest questions I’m always asked is, “How can I learn to trust my intuition?” And that’s when I tell people my dragonfly story.

This is a story about how you can CONFIRM the nudges or gut feelings you get with clear signs from the Universe. 

Requesting Signs from the Universe

My husband Marc and I were house-hunting. We saw house after house, and every single one seemed wrong. Before long, we had exhausted all of the available options and we were feeling quite grumpy about the whole thing. 

We kept telling ourselves that if it was the right house, there would be a sign. Specifically, we asked the Universe to show us a dragonfly — one of my favorite symbols of good fortune and protection — if the home was the right one. 

One day, I received a call from a girlfriend back in Canada telling me she had a house that we would absolutely love. “I know you’re not looking to move back, but this place is perfect for you,” she said. So we set up a tour via Skype. 

On our virtual tour, I was blown away by the house. Although we weren’t planning a move back up to Canada, Marc and I decided to fly up for a weekend to see the place in person. 

As we walked through the house, we were overwhelmed… there were dragonflies everywhere! 

Not real, live dragonflies dive-bombing our heads, but decorations and dragonfly details everywhere we looked. It was like a billboard from heaven. 

We recognized the sign immediately, but we were torn. While the house was priced well for what it was, it was still at the high end of our budget. If we decided to move, we’d be stretching ourselves financially. 

So we had a decision to make… 

And we decided we would trust the signs. After all, we’d asked very clearly for dragonflies to guide us. We got our sign, just as we asked. Were we just going to say, “Nah, that can’t be right?” 

We chose to trust, knowing that the guidance of the Universe had never led us in the wrong direction. We stepped out in faith, trusting that if we moved forward, good things would come. Lo and behold a series of events made this move so easy and effortless and we drove over the border to our new home shaking our heads saying, “Wow can you believe how this all happened?”

Trusting in Perception Beyond the Seen

We moved in mid-summer, and on one of our first evenings in our new home, we sat out on the back porch admiring the natural beauty that surrounded us, and appreciating the chain of events that had taken us to this little spot. 

I noticed a bunch of mosquitos and almost went inside but then suddenly, a cluster of over a dozen dragonflies came flying overhead and ate them all! We were so amazed! The Universe was showing off! We’d already moved forward, but here we were, being welcomed in style. It was a confirmation for following our intuition and the signs the Universe gave us to back up our inner-nudges along the way. 

And that house ended up being an incredible place for us where good things flowed easily our way. I call it our “forever home”.

That’s the way intuition works. It can start as that inner gut-feeling we so often hear about, but it’s so much more than just that. Learning to recognize and trust the hints you’re receiving is how you strengthen this muscle. 

Allow yourself to see beyond what is readily apparent. Be open to guidance from Spirit, which can take many different forms. Dream, imagine, and play with the infinite possibility that is your life. In your mind’s eye, try on different futures. Trust in your own capacity to know what is right. The Universe will never steer you wrong.
