How to Ask the Right Questions in Oracle Card Readings!

When life is full of uncertainty, it’s natural to look for answers to life’s questions and meaning in the chaos. No matter where you are in the world, uncertainty has become sort of like a new normal for all of us. 

And yet, regardless of what’s going on in the outer world, you can find a sense of peace, purpose, and certainty by learning to tune into your inner guidance system. 

Reading Oracle Cards is a fun and accessible way to attune to your inner knowing and Spirit’s guidance as you navigate the twists and turns of life. But your readings are only as good as your questions!

In order to receive valuable guidance from the cards and use them as a tool for personal growth and transformation, you have to have a true and meaningful dialogue with them. The answers you get will reflect the questions you ask. 

How to Read Your Own Oracle Cards – Asking the Right Questions

If you pull Oracle Cards using questions that are complicated or unclear, you will receive messages that feel cryptic and confusing. 

Reading your own Oracle cards and doing Oracle card spreads is actually quite simple – but the subtleties in the way you phrase your questions really do impact your results! 

A common misconception when using Oracle cards is that to get a detailed answer, one that covers everything you want to know about a topic, you should ask a very detailed question.

For example, someone might ask, “What do I need to know about applying for this job and accepting a possible offer where I may end upworking with a person I used to date, but now I’m seeing someone else and don’t want them to be jealous…”

… Wait, WHAT? 🤯

How would you feel if a friend came to you for advice with a question like this? 

I imagine you would be a little bit overwhelmed and confused. You would be able to give much better advice if they asked you clear and simple questions about their situation. Same goes with the cards. 

Asking long, complicated questions is counter-productive to getting clear answers. The absolute best way to get clear answers with Oracle cards is to ask clear questions. When it comes to how to pull Oracle cards with the right questions, simple is best. 

The first question you need to pick a card

I think of each of my Oracle Card decks like a friend I can come to for guidance and input when I need it. Each deck has its own personality, and my intention is to have a dialogue with it. 

This dialogue begins with getting clear on exactly what you want to know BEFORE you pick a card. First, think of a topic that you would like clarity on – maybe it’s a relationship, your career, or a big move. Once you’ve picked your topic, the first question you’ll ask is simply, “what do I need to know about this?”

This might sound like: 

“What do I need to know about making a career change?” 

“What do I need to know about my relationship with my partner?” 

“What do I need to know about the possibility of moving?” 

“What do I need to know?” is one of the best questions you can ask. It’s a great way to open a conversation between you and the Universe. So once you’ve picked a single, clear topic, you can ask this question, choose a card, and then read the guidebook and make note of what stands out to you.

Other questions to ask Oracle Cards 

So what do you do if the topic you’re seeking guidance on is more nuanced and complicated? 

In order to get a really clear answer, it’s best to split up your question into several sections. Going back to the example of the person applying for a new job and potentially working with someone they used to date, it might sound like this: 

1. What do I need to know about applying for this job? 
2. What do I need to know about accepting a possible offer? 
3. What do I need to know about the working dynamic in my relationship with this person I used to date?
4. How might this affect my relationship with the person I am currently dating?

You see how this works?

By breaking it down and asking about each individual thing you want to know about, you get a lot more clarity from the cards because you know exactly what is being addressed. 

Once you master the process of getting clear on the question you want to ask, breaking it down into parts, and creating a dialogue with the cards, you can start experimenting with more complex Oracle Card Spreads.

Questions you should NOT ask your Oracle Cards 

Aside from questions that are complex or overly detailed, another type of question to avoid in an Oracle Card reading is yes or no questions. I know this might seem like the easiest way to get a clear answer, but that is not necessarily true. My cards are not intended for yes or no questions. 

Instead, focus on questions that are simple and clear, but that allow for more open ended answers that reflect the nuance of life!
