Open the Window to Kindness!

Updated: December 9, 2018

One of my friends posted on social media a fantastic advent calendar. Do you know what they are?

I’m not sure if it was just a German tradition but my mom would buy us a big beautiful one at the “German store” (that’s what she called it although I’m sure it had a name) where they sold products and specialty items imported from Germany. It’s also where she got her special DR. Oetker powdered sugar and pudding powders to make her special cakes you could not buy in a Canadian store.

I used to love my advent calendar growing up. Every year my mom would take me to the “German store” and show me the ones I could pick from. I always got the one with the most glitter on it and when I got home we had a little ceremony to tape this special magical calendar into my window on Dec 1st. Every day I would find the little number of the day and I would get to open up a “window” that revealed a tiny gift. I can even still smell the store we got them from.

Then, of course, we celebrated St. Nicholas day too on Dec7th. That was when (I know I wrote about this before but its timely!) on Dec 6th we would put our shoes outside our bedroom door and find them stuffed with chocolate and marzipan and chocolate marzipan and little marzipan pigs, and some marzipan fruit um did I say marzipan?? Oh and an orange. meh.

So Dec 7th (which was this year’s new moon) became an interesting day as my blood sugar would rise and fall with each piggy and chocolate Santa and it would be a day of dramatic highs and lows and a need for water.

It’s actually kind of interesting, when you think of it, how we repeat patterns set so long ago as adults when we’re not looking. This year (and for a very long time before) there was no chocolate at my door delivered by St. Nicholas, no marzipan anything. No advent calendar to open taped to my window to my left. No instead, when I turn around I have another little door to open with a gift inside.

This year’s window to open is to our new fur baby Binkey’s crate next to my head. I have to open the window to her cozy cave to wake her up. I have to say the smell of puppy breath is intoxicating. (photos coming next week)

Anyway I digress! (I have total in love with puppy mush mind) I had a great idea when I saw the advent calendar on my social media profile. On it every day instead of there being a little present behind a window you have to open there is a daily prompt to spread kindness to one person each day. So I decided to make one!! You can start right away.

Here’s how:

Take a big paper and divide it up with all the days left in this month until New Years.
Each date make a date to open the window to kindness.
Here’s a sample week. ( examples can be changed)

Monday, Dec 10th – pay for someone’s coffee in the line behind you
Tuesday, Dec 11th – make it a point to look someone in the eye and say something nice to them
Wednesday, Dec 12 – help someone carry their stuff to their car.
Thursday, Dec 13th – call up an old friend on the phone ( not on FB that’s cheating)and tell them how much they mean to you even if you haven’t talked in ages.
Friday, Dec 13th – be extra nice to the old guy from the Salvation Army standing on the corner.
Saturday, Dec 14th – call home and really listen to what they have to say without trying to fix or change anybody.
Sunday, Dec 15th make some amends you’ve been putting off and be super kind to the person no matter their response.

If you attempt to do this daily for the rest of the month you will experience miracles and get high as a kite without the sugar rush 😉 just an expanded glowing heart. I dare you to wipe that smile off your face.

Love you always.

Thank you Colette. I loved your blog this week and this weekly card reading. The words of love, encouragement, support and wisdom you impart from the very center of your being are echos we need to hear from our Universe. Hope you are having lots of fun with your new puppy! Wayyyyy better for you than chocolate (or marzipan). Big Love!

I believe Christopher Allen on Youtube and Instagram is the Author of the Advent of kindness calendar. Instagram is: @christophera821 and Youtube channel is :christopher allen. I’ve printed it and put in on my refrigerator so my whole family can be involved! His platform is all about spreading kindness. So worth a look!!!

    Hi Colette,
I got a Kindness Advent Calendar from FB and have been working one every single day. I’m a little out of sequence but the results are the same. I’m going to hold on to it and possibly stretch it out for a year as a weekly act of kindness. Thank you for all your work. I love listening to your show on Hay House. I hope someday to take a class with you. Merry Season of Light!

Love this blog, I’m currently sitting with my Dad who is ” between worlds” so when he sleeps have been making my
    Advent calendar.
Today it was to help a stranger. One of the patients outside of my Dad’s room is a young amputee,so I went over and chatted with him while Dad was sleeping. He was in pain so I used get on your bird with him. He loved it, told him about your meditation app so he has downloaded it!
So amidst the chaos and conflict around my Dad
I was able to offer help to a stranger!💖💖🙏

Thank you! That was so timely for me! I have been resisting to connect with people in our personal mastery house to do a reading. Like Spider Spirit said I need to take action. I’ve been getting Change in the Wind a lot lately. Today is the day I am enrolling in Spirit Wisdom. Ok Change, here we come! ❤️to you!

Hi Colette — oh this reading is so beyond wonderful.

Today, this morning, I did bring the “thread” to a dream of mine which is to start a five-day monitored fast. My health concerns have led me to this, and while nervous about going without my usual array of meals, I’ve prepared myself with research & prayer, as well as listening & learning from old fears of hunger that have long scared me into eating too much, too often.

I also read from the animal spirit deck last night and Giraffe Spirit came up reminding me to use “giraffe vision” to see the bigger picture, which helped me see that even if I struggle in the coming week with feelings of hunger, I’m going to see bigger changes in my health for the better. It’s time. And I’m ready for this change.

I love your cards and your readings and your beautiful spirit! Thank you so much!

This is bang on for me. I’m reeling from the chaos as plans collapse and change happens. But feelings of empowerment are also surging through me and I know I can surrender to this and come out ahead even if I don’t see the whole picture. Thanks for the masterful guidance.

    Colette,

These are beautiful ideas to help us share love and light with family, friends and even strangers. I try to deliver random acts of kindness all year long but Christmas is a great place to step up my game. It’s also a good time to try brotherly if you’ve never done it before. The heartwarming, cup-filling glow one experiences upon delivering kindness is indescribable but oh-so-good!

Thanks for leading the way toward global love.

See you in SW again! 😊

I love this – I do make a practice to do these kind of things, and you’re absolutely right, it just magnetized more good energy. I love the idea of doing this as an advent calendar 💖
Happy New Puppy Time with you new wee baby dog, Colette.!. 😊
And thank you for always reminding all of us that kindness is the gift that gives back in multiples- it is a way of living which you model beautifully .💗

Lovely idea. Thank you for sharing. I too always had an advent calendar. Mine did not have little gifts in side, but a continuation poem about angels. I did not get a new one each year, but carefully closed each window to save for the next advent season, and after a few years, brought out the necessary scotch tape. The poem started “Two little angels, with beautiful voices, who sang in the heavenly choir, were called one day….. ” This probably was the first 3 windows. I wish I could remember the remaining verses. So thank you for this trip down my childhood memory lane. ♥

I think this is one your best blogs ever! I have also had many advent calendars growing up, and have continued the tradition with my children, and then my grandsons. I absolutely adore your idea of creating our own! Thank you!

I also absolutely adore the name you have chosen for “Binkey!” Can’t wait to see her! There is definitely nothing so great as puppy breath! 🐶 Congratulations! And, what a perfect way to begin the New Year!
Much love to you, Marc, Bizou and Binkey! Thanks for making my life special! 🙏🏻❤️Happiest of Holidays❣️❣️❣️❣️🎄🎄🎄☀️☀️☀️

This was so spot on for me this week. Start of the week I was feeling very down on myself and stuck and then I started working on replacimg my negative thoughts with positive affirmations and actually visualizimg what my new life would look and feel like and today at work I was having the best conversations where we were really comnecting and I was being reminded how much I need to connect in a very meaningful way with others. Last night and today I developed resolve to leave this job that Ive been in rather miserably for the past 10 years and I’ve devised a plan and rather clearly visualized what my new self employment life will look like. I’ve been doing lots of online training to work toward that visualization. Today also felt like a day of forgiveness as I had a nice moment with someone at work who I was holding a grudge with and today I just felt it melt away. So the readimg is everything my week has been!!!
